Solas Weddings - Photography

Yet again it has been a whirlwind of a Summer so far in weddings and work and my poor blog has been the one to suffer!

Today's feature is with husband and wife photography team, James and Megan of Solas Wedding and Portrait Photography.

Tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds.

James was born in Ireland and studied photography at University in Limerick. He has been working as a news and editorial photographer both in Ireland and Australia for the past 15 years.

Megan grew up in Hobart and has been worked extensively as a picture editor for news and sports agencies in Ireland and Australia since completing a photography degree in Brisbane. She also works as a food and lifestyle photographer.

We met while both working at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006. We immediately formed a strong connection due to our shared passion for photography. We began shooting weddings together in 2009 and haven’t looked back since.

What inspired you to make a career out of photography?

We are very visual people who were lucky enough to be encouraged in the area of photography by family members during our early years. James, by his father and Megan by her Grandfather.

We have found wedding photography to be a particularly rewarding form of photography. There is something very special and enjoyable about being part of one of the happiest days in a couple’s life. We get the opportunity to record the day, produce beautiful portraits and deliver these to very grateful clients. It really is a very positive experience.

How would you describe your photography style?

Because of our combined 20+ years of experience as photojournalists and editorial photographers, we work very quickly to capture the spontaneous moments and create fun portraits to showcase a couple's big day. These images are then carefully edited to create beautiful storybook albums.

What inspires you?

We are constantly inspired by the current high standard in wedding photography worldwide. We follow a number of amazing photographers in Sydney and Brisbane as well as many on the West Coast of America.

The individuality, attention to details and love shown by many couples also inspires us to produce images of the highest standard.

Tell us about the best wedding you’ve photographed and why?

It is impossible to choose just one as we have had so many wonderful experiences. Holly and Kevin’s wedding in the Southern Highlands of NSW, earlier this year, was a definite highlight. The location, styling and atmosphere of the day was relaxed and welcoming but very chic at the same time.

Sarah and Ruben’s London wedding was one of our favourites. The couple were so relaxed and friendly which allowed us to work our magic and deliver very memorable images. Their Buddhist ceremony was really different and their decorations at their reception were 100% their own personal style.

What is your favourite moment at a wedding?

It might sound cliché but our favourite moment is that instant where the groom sees the bride for the first time and the atmosphere is electric with emotion and anticipation.

What are your favourite wedding trends at the moment?

We believe what makes weddings so special, at the moment, is the couple’s ability to create their individual day with their own ideas and atmosphere. We love that couples are making their own props, decorations and setting their own traditions.

What song is guaranteed to make you get up and dance?

The Hokey Pokey.

Thanks for sharing, James and Megan! We cannot wait to see more gorgeous photos from Solas Photography.

This talented couple are based between Sydney and Hobart but are available for weddings worldwide.

Sarah Williams - Photographer

It's always great discovering new talent here in Tasmania and Sarah Williams is no exception. This amazing young photographer may only just be starting out, but she has already shown how talented she is and I'm sure you'll fall in love with her photos as much as I have.

Sarah dropped by The Apple Aisle for a chat about all things wedding!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

I’m 24 with a beautiful family and amazing friends. My love of photography has started taking over my weekends, which makes me very happy!

I love daydreaming of shooting fashion editorials in Paris one day and having a miniature daschund called Audrey…for now I am happy being a lover of all things vintage, challenging myself to be the best photographer I can be, and meeting lots of new and special people along the way.

What inspired you to make a career out of photography?

It has always been a love of mine, but it wasn’t until a great friend planted the seed in my head that I could make this a career – to spend my days doing what I love – that I really started dreaming about it. With lots of support from family and friends, it’s slowly becoming a reality.

How would you describe your photography style?

My style is very natural and a little indie/vintage, while still remaining timeless. I love capturing moments as they unfold...real moments.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I love how anything can spark an idea…sometimes it’s the simplest of things like beautiful light, a retro room, an interesting person, old buildings, a black and white movie or an op shop.

I also love looking through magazines (Frankie is a big favourite), blogs and other photographers' work. I have recently discovered a site called Pinterest; it’s a great way to keep all your favourite ideas and inspiration in the one place – I love it!

What interests you about wedding photography?

I think it is so amazing to be invited to share in a couple’s special day. It is the best feeling – you are surrounded by love, beautiful emotions, a little fashion and people’s natural beauty just shines through and I love it.

As the day flows people forget they are having their photos taken and you get to capture these special memories for them to look back on forever. What I love even more is that my favourites images are often of the sweet little looks and touches that happen in between.

Any tips for aspiring photographers?

I know people say it all the time – but take photos, photos and more photos! It really is the best way to learn – play, challenge yourself, learn from your mistakes, experiment, find what you love to capture and dream big.

Who are some great Tasmanian wedding vendors you’ve worked with so far?

Studio White are a bridal store in the North of Tasmania who stock beautiful, different dresses for Tassie brides...I’m always excited when a little vintage inspired style is offered here!

Meags Artistry in Hobart also does amazing make-up.

What song is guaranteed to make you get up and dance?

Any of the oldies - they are the best to get up and dance to!

LisaK Photography

Ever since starting The Apple Aisle, we have been blown away with the fantastic wedding vendors here in Tasmania. It really makes this little state such a great place to get married in, whether you're from here or you've chosen it for your Destination Wedding.

Today we were lucky enough to chat to a very talented Hobart-based photographer, Lisa Kuilenburg of LisaK Photography. Lisa has also shared some beautiful photos from Engagement, Fashion and Wedding shoots she's done.

Welcome Lisa! Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

I’m a wife to a wonderful, creative and loving husband and the mum to a cheeky, bubbly three year old girl (who is very soon to be the big sister to offspring number two!)

I’ve spent most of my life growing up in beautiful Tassie and truly love living here.

I come from a big family and tend to be a bit stubborn. I’m creative, a pretty terrible cook and a lover of all things girly, whimsical and nostalgic.

What inspired you to make a career out of photography?

This is going to sound terribly clichéd but I’ve just always loved photos and taking photos. The magical ability that photography has of freezing a moment in time forever never gets old for me.

Even so, I spent four years at Uni and came out with a degree in Education!

While I still love working with children, photography has always my ‘dream job’ and I would often read photography books in my work lunch break!

After I had my daughter and stopped working, I found myself with more time to take photos and develop my skills. With lots of encouragement from my hubby and friends, things just sort of snowballed and before I knew it I was taking photos for other people!

How would you describe your photography style?

I think my photography style is very much of a reflection of my love for light, warmth, beauty and joy. I would like to think it’s mostly candid, with a little bit of an editorial/lifestyle feel.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I get a lot of inspiration from what I see around me, from light and from emotions.

And of course I love to look through magazines! I’m always tearing out pages that appeal to me and pinning them on to mood boards or filing them away in folders. I also find inspiration from movies, blogs and the work of other photographers.

What interests you about wedding photography?

I think one of the main reasons I love photographing weddings is because it combines so many of my favourite aspects of photography in the one day. Wedding days are full of candid moments, raw emotion, beauty and joy….all things I love to capture.

At the same time there’s a little bit of a fashion and editorial side; photographing the dress, the bridal party and all the pretty details etc.

It’s a very happy and appealing combo for me!

Any tips for aspiring photographers?

I would say to take more and more photos, make mistakes, learn from your mistakes and take more photos! I believe photography is truly an art learnt best by doing and seeing.

Also, shoot whatever you are most passionate about because ultimately your passion will shine through your work.

Who are some great Tasmanian wedding vendors you’ve worked with so far?

I have been very impressed with the work of Brianna Schipper who is a professional make up artist. She’s totally lovely and her skills are fabulous.

What song is guaranteed to make you get up and dance?

Well, lets just say it doesn’t take much to convince me to dance! I’ll pretty much be up on the floor to any catchy pop tune! But if I was to narrow it down to one, ‘Love Shack’ by the B52’s is always a winner!

Thanks Lisa and good luck with baby number 2!
