To veil, or not to veil...

There are many different beliefs surrounding the tradition of the wedding veil. In Western society it was said to represent the bride's submission to her groom, as well as her virginity, innocence and modesty. In cultures of arranged marriages it is the lifting of the veil that marks the moment that the bride's parents present their daughter to the groom for his approval.

Thankfully, these days it is seen more as a wedding accessory (the feminist movement definitely helped us there!)

Look back at your grandparents wedding photos and you're almost sure to find your grandmother donning a long white veil. You might even find that's also the case for your mother.

These days, it is not uncommon for a bride to walk down the aisle without a veil. There are so many other options in hairstyles and accessories that including a veil might look over the top or even dated.

Here are a few different accessories that modern brides are opting for:

1. Vintage Hair Clip

If you're going for an up-do, a vintage clip can add so much to your look without looking over the top.

2. Flowers

Flowers in a bride's hair can look gorgeous, especially at a beach or garden wedding.

There are so many beautiful fake flowers out there to put in your hair rather than risk having a wilted flower falling out of your hair by the end of the day. However if you do decide to wear a real flower, be sure to speak to your florist about the best way to keep it fresh throughout the day (this may just involve getting more than one and changing it every few hours.)

3. Headband

A headband can change your look in lots of different ways, depending on what type you choose. Gone are the days when a headband was just a piece of material worn across your crown, now there is a great selection to choose from...

  • Beaded
  • Jewelled
