LisaK Photography

Ever since starting The Apple Aisle, we have been blown away with the fantastic wedding vendors here in Tasmania. It really makes this little state such a great place to get married in, whether you're from here or you've chosen it for your Destination Wedding.

Today we were lucky enough to chat to a very talented Hobart-based photographer, Lisa Kuilenburg of LisaK Photography. Lisa has also shared some beautiful photos from Engagement, Fashion and Wedding shoots she's done.

Welcome Lisa! Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

I’m a wife to a wonderful, creative and loving husband and the mum to a cheeky, bubbly three year old girl (who is very soon to be the big sister to offspring number two!)

I’ve spent most of my life growing up in beautiful Tassie and truly love living here.

I come from a big family and tend to be a bit stubborn. I’m creative, a pretty terrible cook and a lover of all things girly, whimsical and nostalgic.

What inspired you to make a career out of photography?

This is going to sound terribly clichéd but I’ve just always loved photos and taking photos. The magical ability that photography has of freezing a moment in time forever never gets old for me.

Even so, I spent four years at Uni and came out with a degree in Education!

While I still love working with children, photography has always my ‘dream job’ and I would often read photography books in my work lunch break!

After I had my daughter and stopped working, I found myself with more time to take photos and develop my skills. With lots of encouragement from my hubby and friends, things just sort of snowballed and before I knew it I was taking photos for other people!

How would you describe your photography style?

I think my photography style is very much of a reflection of my love for light, warmth, beauty and joy. I would like to think it’s mostly candid, with a little bit of an editorial/lifestyle feel.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I get a lot of inspiration from what I see around me, from light and from emotions.

And of course I love to look through magazines! I’m always tearing out pages that appeal to me and pinning them on to mood boards or filing them away in folders. I also find inspiration from movies, blogs and the work of other photographers.

What interests you about wedding photography?

I think one of the main reasons I love photographing weddings is because it combines so many of my favourite aspects of photography in the one day. Wedding days are full of candid moments, raw emotion, beauty and joy….all things I love to capture.

At the same time there’s a little bit of a fashion and editorial side; photographing the dress, the bridal party and all the pretty details etc.

It’s a very happy and appealing combo for me!

Any tips for aspiring photographers?

I would say to take more and more photos, make mistakes, learn from your mistakes and take more photos! I believe photography is truly an art learnt best by doing and seeing.

Also, shoot whatever you are most passionate about because ultimately your passion will shine through your work.

Who are some great Tasmanian wedding vendors you’ve worked with so far?

I have been very impressed with the work of Brianna Schipper who is a professional make up artist. She’s totally lovely and her skills are fabulous.

What song is guaranteed to make you get up and dance?

Well, lets just say it doesn’t take much to convince me to dance! I’ll pretty much be up on the floor to any catchy pop tune! But if I was to narrow it down to one, ‘Love Shack’ by the B52’s is always a winner!

Thanks Lisa and good luck with baby number 2!
